Story of Kalidasa and Bhavabhuti

In ancient India, there was a great dramatist and scholar named Bhavabhuti. He is considered equal with the great Kalidasa in his literary works Both of them were the stars adorning the court of Raja Bhoja. Once in Kailasa- the abode of Lord Siva, Goddess Parvati raised a doubt. She asked Siva, “who is greater, Kalidasa or Bhavabhuthi?” For which, Siva answered- “Both are equally competent. But there is a slight difference in their attitudes. Kalidasa has great confidence in himself, whereas, Bhavabhuti lags slightly behind., You may assess both of them and come to your own conclusion.” Goddess Parvathy, decided to test the two great men. She went and stood at the huge gate of King Raja Bhoja’s palace disguising as a poor widow. She held her son- Lord Subramania in Her hand disguised as a dead infant. After a while, all the learned men started coming out of the court one by one. She approached each one of them and pleaded. “look here please, my child is dead due to a curse. He will regain his life if someone completes this Sanskrit couplet”. Saying this, she showed the incomplete work. All the scholars tried their best to complete, but the child did not show any sign of life. Then, Bhavabhuti arrived. He completed the couplet, the child did not move. “What will I do?” The widow asked Bhavabhuti. Bhavabhuti responded…
